Balfour Beatty Work on New Busway Project

Friday 5th February, 2016

Balfour Beatty began site clearance work of the 4.5km Guided Busway project from Leigh to Ellenbrook in Greater Manchester during the summer of 2013.

Whilst this was happening, the project team were developing the final designs in consultation with local residents, the local authorities and third parties such as the Environment Agency and Forestry Commission.

During 2014 Balfour Beatty removed around 175,000m³ of earth and an extensive construction programme began which included the use of Marshalls Civils and Drainage's Redi-Rock™ modular retaining blocks that benefits from offering not only a pleasing aesthetic look to the project but is also fast to install and is delivered ready to use in any weather.

The 14 stop busway is due to open later this year and will reduce journey times between Leigh and central Manchester to less than 50 minutes. The high quality buses will avoid traffic congestion along the route and offer passengers more reliable, shorter journeys which are both smoother and quieter.
