Perfect Manhole cuts costs and time for Advance Construction

Perfect Manhole cuts costs and time for Advance Construction

When Frazer's agreed to support the CPM Perfect Manhole system they knew it was a positive step in the installation of drainage systems as the system takes away all the hassle of installation, ensuring that the benching process - normally a highly-skilled and time-consuming job - is completed in under an hour, a far cry from the 2 - 3 days traditional manhole rings would entail.  Whereas before using ready-mixed concete to form the base, smoothing the channels and adding further concrete would required the time of a specialist labourer, the CPM Perfect Manhole provides a fully-sealed system.

Frazers presented the concept to Advance Construction, who had been sub-contracted by Walker Homes to oversee the groundworks of a site in West Lothian, Scotland.  Darren Sommer, Engineering Manager, and ALan Mulvanny, Chief Buyer at Advance Construction, were impressed with the system, and decided to use it for the Walker Homes site.

Gerry Gallacher, foreman at the site, was very impressed with the speed of the installation, which took 45 minutes for two manholes measuring 1800mm and 1200mm deep respectively.

As well as the time saved on the installation, the costs were significantly reduced due to the eliminated need for skilled labourers and safety fencing, which brings us onto the health and safety benefits the system provides: with such a quick installation period comes a much safer working environment and site measures.  The need to work in confined spaces is also reduced, providing a much more efficient work space.

Scottish Water inspectors were very positive towards the final result as the Perfect Manhole removed the risk of channels being improperly benched, which in turn means a highly reduced risk of sewage blockages in the future.

With a system designed and manufactured to last a minumum of 120 years, excellent results and a very impressed client, we look forward to working with more happy customers who opt for the Perfect Manhole!

Severn Trent invests in sewer upgrade

Severn Trent invests in sewer upgrade

CPM has supplied precast concrete caisson rings to Severn Trent Water via their contract partners, Mott McDonald Bentley to Cutnall Green in Worcestershire.

The £600,000 upgrade includes a 3km of new sewers across fields and sections of the A442, Doverdale Lane and Wassage Way and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

In future, sewage will be pumped away rather than treated on site, which will better protect the environment and hep to prevent pollution in local rivers and streams.

Gareth Mead from Severn Trent Water said: “To make sure the quality of water in our streams and rivers get better and better, we need to continually improve and upgrade our sewers and treatment works.  Our improvements will now see Cutnall Green becoming a sewage pumping station with waste water treated at Droitwich, a larger high tech site nearby.”

CPM offers SuDS solution and saves the trees

CPM offers SuDS solution and saves the trees

When Beech Developments began work on 142 properties at the Gwel Y Castell Housing site on the grounds of an old school and playing fields at Llandudno Junction in North Wales, the percolation tests indicated that soakaways were not possible due to the nature of the soil conditions.

Beech Developments therefore, had to look at discharging the storm water through the Welsh Water network and following calculations of existing run-off rates, both the Environment Agency and Welsh Water agreed to a permissible discharge of 17 l/s from the whole development.

This required flows to be attenuated on site for the 1% storm event which would be achieved using large precast concrete pipes and Hydro-Brakes® and Beech Developments included storage of 20% which allowed for the future effects of climate change as agreed with the Environment Agency.

Beech Developments looked at both concrete and plastic pipework for the project but took the final decision of using precast concrete pipes from CPM due to there suitability under roads, strength and longevity, installation, maintenance and overall cost.

The second phase of the scheme called for a retaining wall solution with Beech Developments using CPM’s Redi-Rock™ modular walling system as the ingenious system provided all the design and engineering required, as well as the big blocks being delivered in a timely fashion.

John Gardiner, Technical Co-ordinator for Beech Developments said “the nature of retaining wall supplied by CPM offered ease of construction as well as an aesthetically pleasing solution and most importantly for Conwy Council, the ability to be placed extremely close to the land being retained, meaning on this development, not a single existing tree needed to be sacrificed.”
