CPM helps with Kenyan healthcare programme

CPM helps with Kenyan healthcare programme

CPM has sponsored two nurses, Beth Evans and Vicki Wickham to attend healthcare outreach clinics in Kenya to support the local healthcare programme

The aim of the programme was to collaborate with the local healthcare professionals and provide a basic free healthcare outreach service and sexual health workshops to the people in the Taita County within the Tsavo East National Park.

The two nurses held clinics in five different schools in the region – Itinyi, Marasi, Kale, Bugata and Sasenyi, which were planned by the Government Ministry of Health, Kenyan Red Cross, local nurses from Bugata, Maungu and Marunga dispensary’s, chiefs of the villages and the Kwale Eye Clinic. There were also two lab technicians available to carry out testing for malaria and HIV.

The programme provided a deworming course for everyone over the age of 2 years as many of the children live in unsanitary conditions and suffer from intestinal worm infestations and diarrhoea resulting in stunted development. Soil transmitted helminth infections are among the common infections worldwide and affect the poorest and most deprived communities.

The most common diseases found were fungal skin infections, malnutrition, and upper and lower respiratory infections, joint pains, pelvic inflammatory disease, intestinal diseases, dental problems and asthma. Multiple drugs were used in these cases and many treated with antibiotics and pain killers. Some people being treated for more than three to four ailments and referrals were made for malaria, HIV and TB testing.

The report from the trip is not be available from Camps International yet but raw data shows that the nurses treated nearly 5,000 people over those clinics

Balfour Beatty work on new busway project

Balfour Beatty work on new busway project

Balfour Beatty began site clearance work of the 4.5km guided busway project from Leigh to Ellenbrook in Greater Manchester during the summer of 2013.

Whilst this was happening, the project team were developing the final designs in consultation with local residents, the local authorities and third parties such as the Environment Agency and Forestry Commission.

During 2014 Balfour Beatty removed around 175,000m³ of earth and an extensive construction programme began which included the use of CPM’s Redi-Rock™ modular retaining blocks that benefits from offering not only a pleasing aesthetic look to the project but is also fast to install and is delivered ready to use in any weather.

The 14 stop busway is due to open later this year and will reduce journey times between Leigh and central Manchester to less than 50 minutes.  The high quality buses will avoid traffic congestion along the route and offer passengers more reliable, shorter journeys which are both smoother and quieter.

Perfect Manhole cuts costs and time for Advance Construction

Perfect Manhole cuts costs and time for Advance Construction

When Frazer's agreed to support the CPM Perfect Manhole system they knew it was a positive step in the installation of drainage systems as the system takes away all the hassle of installation, ensuring that the benching process - normally a highly-skilled and time-consuming job - is completed in under an hour, a far cry from the 2 - 3 days traditional manhole rings would entail.  Whereas before using ready-mixed concete to form the base, smoothing the channels and adding further concrete would required the time of a specialist labourer, the CPM Perfect Manhole provides a fully-sealed system.

Frazers presented the concept to Advance Construction, who had been sub-contracted by Walker Homes to oversee the groundworks of a site in West Lothian, Scotland.  Darren Sommer, Engineering Manager, and ALan Mulvanny, Chief Buyer at Advance Construction, were impressed with the system, and decided to use it for the Walker Homes site.

Gerry Gallacher, foreman at the site, was very impressed with the speed of the installation, which took 45 minutes for two manholes measuring 1800mm and 1200mm deep respectively.

As well as the time saved on the installation, the costs were significantly reduced due to the eliminated need for skilled labourers and safety fencing, which brings us onto the health and safety benefits the system provides: with such a quick installation period comes a much safer working environment and site measures.  The need to work in confined spaces is also reduced, providing a much more efficient work space.

Scottish Water inspectors were very positive towards the final result as the Perfect Manhole removed the risk of channels being improperly benched, which in turn means a highly reduced risk of sewage blockages in the future.

With a system designed and manufactured to last a minumum of 120 years, excellent results and a very impressed client, we look forward to working with more happy customers who opt for the Perfect Manhole!
